FOO FIGHTERS 2020 part 2

FOO FIGHTERS - Cleveland (Artist Copies)

18" x 24" • Screen Print • Signed & Numbered • Edition of 50

MORE INFO HERE http://bodega.brianewing.com/foo-fighters-2020/

**This is the only edition signed by me! The band's copies will NOT be signed.

THINK I NEED A DEVIL...TO HELP ME GET THINGS RIGHT

I've always wanted to draw the #RoswellAlien in a poster and have always resisted when designing posters for FF. But this seemed appropriate. After the Roswell incident in 1947, the remnants of the crash was moved to Hangar 18 at Ohio's #WrightPattersonAirForceBase. The original pitch for these posters was that the band had to travel from Cincinnati to Cleveland and what's in between those cities? a million Skyline Chili restaurants.

I mean #Hangar18!!!!

I also really wanted to draw more #Faustian dudes! Like the one I drew on the Social Distortion tour poster a few years back.

After seeing this all put together I feel like I unconsciously channeled all that I loved of my favorite poster artists from the 90's. I’m trying to and push the direction I’m taking the posters with color and composition.

@VGKIDS killed it again with printing and helping me do the color seps on this one!!! So STOKED!!!! I owe them many beers!

I will do my best to match the numbers for people who decide to get both the Cincinnati and Cleveland prints!!!

Also available are the concept sketches and final art for both posters.

**THESE WILL SHIP AFTER 1/31

BIG HUGE WET THANKS to Foo Fighters & their management for inviting me to participate with the other artist in this (canceled) tour series!!! THANK YOU!!!

CAN EVERYTHING EVER FEEL THIS REAL FOREVER ...

I really LOVE old romance comic book covers! I think they are a well of inspiration & especially amusement when designing posters for b&s who don't always take themselves seriously. This was HEAVILY inspired by the YOUNG ROMANCE issue 150 cover by Jay Scott Pike! I asked the printer @VGKIDS to print this like an old comic book would be printed - with a 4 color process !!! Check out the detail photos! I'm so stoked!

I’ve also wanted to draw the infamous Roswell Alien. Which you'll see more of in the Cleveland poster.

Last December, the band hit me up to design 2 posters for their 25th-anniversary tour.

I submitted a bunch of ideas & was waiting on pins & needles to see if they liked any of them & when I could start.

But then life happened & well... you know the rest. The b& was bummed. I was bummed. The world was bummed.

Fast Forward to this November, and they hit me up again to see if I had time to pick up where we left off. (I might've peed my pants a little bit.) They changed the theme of the tour and so, like a dork, I worked on a set of new ideas and submitted those. In the months of 2020, I've made a concerted effort (pun intended) to really push myself and the direction I can take my art.

So yeah...

I have EXCLUSIVE variants, signed & numbered copies, plus original art available only through my site and I'm giving yous guys - NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIBERS first chance to snag them!

I’ll only have a few copies of the prints. Don’t sleep and be forced to troll eBay or one of the Facebook pages hoping to win these prints in a waffle!

JOKER - unHAPPY HOLIDAYS
18" x 24" • Screen Print • Signed & Numbered • Edition of 50
https://bodega.brianewing.com/search.php?search_query=JOKER

JINGLE BELLS BATMAN SMELLS...

I decided to come up with a festive colorway for this one without using the usual red & green. Those colors make my eyeballs vibrate too much. I wanted something that was easier on the eyes & used the 70's color palette from the movie. Something that people would display year-round. (And not December - July like some of us will be doing with the Christmas tree.).

As an extra bonus - each JOKER print will include one of these 3" die-cut KEYCHAINS!!! Cuz I'm sure you guys are getting sick of stickers! Scroll on…

If you're a JOKER COMPLETIST and want to match the numbers of this colorway with the previous colorways - LET ME KNOW!
EMAIL me a pic of the print with the edition number visible. No nudity, please!...

THE STROKES

strokes.jpg

THE STROKES 11/23/01
11”x17" • Offset Print
Signed & Numbered edition of 300

I’m a few days late…
Holy cow…I did this 19 years ago?! I’m trying to scrub my brain & recall where I was at in my life. Well…it was 2001. I was working at Hustler Magazine & doing gig posters on the side. I was commissioned by the venue 328 performance hall & I think philaarts

Back then, a lot of poster artists had to pay to print the posters that they were “commissioned” to do. I was just starting out & didn’t have much money so I only made 11x17 offsets for the print run. This was never a screen print.

I remember that The Strokes IS THIS IT had just come out. All the cool kids hated on the band for whatever reason. They wrote GREAT songs! They were BIG & I remember trying to get tickets to their show in LA but it sold out in a second. So the idea was to draw a hipster dude begging for tickets. I based the guy off a buddy of mine, Kerry. He was a good dude! But he had the iconic “Silverlake Look”. Ironically, the band was from NYC.

Back then I worked at 11x17 on bristol board. I used a winsor and newton series 7 sable size 2 brush & drphmartins Blackstar India ink. Size 2 feels like a mop to me nowadays. I currently use a size 0.

I wasn’t very confident of my inking back then. So I would use a black prismacolor to soften up the shadows of the leather jacket & for the cardboard sign. A trick I learned from reading ANDREW LOOMIS books. PLEASE check him out. They’ve been reprinted & are affordable. You will learn a lot from them!!!.

Fast forward 19 years & I’m still doing posters. This piece has been reprinted in numerous magazines & books. I could cringe & be embarrassed about this but I’m actually proud. I’m still doing posters & my work has improved a tiny bit.

ALL ORDERS shipping this week!.

The NEW JOKER colorway is up in the shop but no one ever reads this far…

Earlier in the year, I was commissioned by the Facebook poster collector group - Waffle Con 2020 to design a poster for one of the movies in their movie marathon! I'm stoked to FINALLY show everyone! Plus I’ve been buried under a deadline so I haven’t had time to until now!

I went nuts on the details for this project. The WaffleCon guys are HUGE fans of the movie & I wanted to make sure I got everything right & surprised them with details they weren’t expecting. There’s an underlying layer of gloss designed with Willard’s tigerstripe camouflage print that subtly catches the light depending on what angle you look at it. The collage background calls out many well-known quotes & features the iconic characters from the movie - including the playboy playmates & Captain Colby.

I didn't see this movie until I was an adult. It resonated with me differently every time I revisited the movie as I got older. This movie is right up there with TAXI DRIVER as far as feeling like or wanting to identify with a character. I felt like every character in the movie depending on how old I was at the time. From "Mr. Clean" (innocent) to Johnson (carefree) to #Willard (tasked) and eventually to Kurtz (exhausted and mortified). It's a heavy movie!!!

After talking to the guys at Wafflecon - it was decided to focus on Kurtz and the horrors he's created and seen. The pain and exhaustion and eventually the need for it all to end.

Earlier in the year, I was commissioned by the Facebook poster collector group - WAFFLECON to design a poster for one of the movies in their movie marathon! I'm stoked to FINALLY show everyone! Plus I’ve been buried under a deadline so I haven’t had time to until now!.

I only have a few copies of the prints available!

In my last post, I touched down a bit on the drawing process.
So here’s a bit on the inking process.
Once I was happy with the pencil sketch - I scanned it at 600dpi grayscale. In #photoshop I messed with the levels and then printed it out on 8.5 x 11 2-ply bristol board. This saves me a TON of time and stress by not having to lightbox it!! I have a crappy b&w laser printer and by dumb luck, I can print onto bristol board. But no bigger than 8.5 x 11.

From there I will touch up the sketch with a pencil to make sure I can see the detail before inking.

I use a @winsorandnewton series 7 sable size 0 brush and @fabercastellusa S & M Pitt pens. Thanks again to #fabercastell for sending me a box of them! Send more #nudgenudge!

I use @alvindrafting circle templates @drphmartins Blackstar India ink and mix it with a few drops of @rotringofficial rapidograph ink.

Exciting…I know.

I don’t use white-out while inking. Just not a fan of how it yellows over time or worse - flakes away.

From there I’ll scan it 600dpi and save it as a bitmap tiff!

After talking to the guys at Wafflecon - it was decided to focus on Kurtz and the horrors he's seen and created. The pain & exhaustion & eventually the need for it all to end. As tempting as it was to just draw Martin Sheen quietly emerging from the fog & water to put an end to Kurtz… I wanted to go in a different direction.

This was drawn with a #colerase red pencil on 8.5 x 11 regular bond paper. I switched to drawing on sheets of paper instead of in my #sketchbook because there has been a demand for the original art on projects. I don’t haft rip it out of my sketchbook.

I ended up drawing the anatomy twice. I can get neurotic and sometimes find it easier to just redraw something rather than futz with it digitally. The shoulder & rib cage seemed off to me so I needed to fix it before I did the final pencils & inks.

Drawing the hands has got the be the hardest part for me. I have a few anatomy books that I use for reference whenever I need to get things right. I’m obsessed with accuracy even when it’s not called for. Funny enough - the head of WaffleCon is a medical doctor and told me that the drawing was spot on!

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

Videoshop-2020-11-11-16-27-12.GIF

BUFFALO BILL 11/11/17
18”x24" Screen Print
MORE INFO HERE
http://bodega.brianewing.com/search.php?search_query=buffalo

In continuation of “every day is HALLOWEEN” here’s the BUFFALO BILL SILENCE OF THE LAMBS print I designed back in 2017.

Funny story - an outside company asked me to design a poster for Laura Jane Grace and their awesome band Against Me!. If you swipe through you can see the original gig poster. And the original art - which are still available... nudgenudge

FYI These were NEVER printed as Against Me posters.

So yeah that funny story… the band was so angry with the guy curating the tour posters that they wanted nothing to do with the artwork. The guy threatened legal action against the band (& management) and wanted us to do the same.

Yeah… NO.

It was a bummer that the artists were collateral damage from whatever this guy had done to piss off the band. He didn’t pay us and eventually, most of us stopped working with the guy. That’s another funny story…

The screens had been burned and it was on the press when I got the news. Luckily the printer was cool enough to let me switch out one of the screens to make this into an art print at the last minute.

So that’s how this became an art print.

The IDEA came about when I was I was talking to my buddy David @vannenwatches about starting the project and he was helping me brainstorm weird ideas that work for the band's aesthetic and also be iconic. He came up with "Buffalo Bill" and suggested I explore the characters from Silence of the Lambs. I LOVE that movie. It TERRIFIED me as a kid. The monsters were human and eerily reflected what was going on in the city where I had grown up - Milwaukee. ifyouknowthenyouknow

As an extra bonus - EACH FRIDA print will include one of these 3" die-cut foil stickers!!!

The artwork was originally designed for one of MORRISSEY'S shows in 2013! I made one art print from it and then, in true fashion - my schedule was crazy and I forgot to explore more color variations...

The idea behind using Frida's portrait for a Morrissey poster came about like this: Everyone seems to always do a portrait of Morrissey when designing a poster for him. I wanted to do something different and focus on his fans. Moz’s fans emulated him and the album art (his former band - the Smiths) used. Whether in their melancholic disenchanted view of being young or by the way they pomped their hair and cuffed their jeans. The dissected image of Frida manages to convey both of those ideas. She was a defiant and radical surreal folk artist who ended up influencing so many people way past her death in 1954. If Frida were born later, she would have a bootleg copy of The Smiths’ first album playing in the background as she went on her path to self-discovery with her self portraits and torrid marriage to Diego Rivera.

The bones listed in the poster call out the injuries she sustained when she was 18. Kahlo was riding in a bus that collided with a trolley car. She suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident, including a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, eleven fractures in her right leg, a crushed and dislocated right foot and a dislocated shoulder. Also, an iron handrail pierced her abdomen and her uterus, compromising her reproductive capacity. Thank you, Wikipedia!

I hope you guys know some Spanish - scattered throughout the poster are quotes Frida is most well-known for. One of my favorites would be "I hope the leaving is joyful — and I hope never to return — Frida".

BRAND NEW 10/31/03
16x22 screenprint
I have a few copies from the original run left.

In continuation of every day is Halloween here’s a gig poster I designed for Brand New, Eisley, Hot Rod Circuit & Orange Island’s show at the @trocphilly waaaay back on October 31st, 2003!.

At the time, I had just finished a screenprinting class at the Pasadena Community College with one of the BEST printers (and teachers) I know - @j.e.miner Thanks to John, I learned how to design for screenprinting. I got the idea to overprint the ghosts after meeting Jordan Crane who was printing in the back of meltdown comics around then. PLEASE check him out!

Looking back at the file info I guess I designed this early in March of that year. It wasn’t until a few months later that the band asked me to design their 2003 tour poster, shirt, and backdrop. There are a few funny stories that go with that project. (Buy me a beer someday and I’ll tell ya.) A few months after that I designed the cover for their “Holidays ep”. Wow…I’m old.

I’m racking my brain as to what was the inspiration for this. Halloween obviously. But why is a half-naked lady wearing a cat mask? I have no clue. I know I had just quit working at Hustler Magazine and I was/still am HEAVILY inspired by COOP! & ADAM HUGHES! If you dig #pinup art CHECK THOSE GUYS OUT!

When you scroll through - you can see the stages of the piece from sketch, to inks, and to the final piece.
The final inks were 11x17 on 3 ply bristol board.
I used a @winsorandnewton series 7 no.2 brush and @fabercastellusa pens for inking.
The sketch is around 3” tall.

ALL ORDERS are shipping tonight, tomorrow and Monday.

THANKS to everyone that ordered and for being patient!

I’m juggling a lot of cats right now!

LISA!

lisa.working1.jpg

LISA 12/30/16
8.5 x 11 offset print

I’m giving these away FREE with any order of the Bart Simpson or Milhouse Van Houten 18x24 prints!!!

MORE INFO HERE

*This print is only available from me at shows/conventions or select shops and galleries.

I originally drew this Lisa Simpson for a friend’s birthday. Maybe it was Christmas. I can’t remember. Earlier that year I had drawn up a skeletal version of her husband’s favorite comic book character The TICK. So for her birthday, I drew up LISA.

I didn’t give myself much free time between tattooing and freelancing so I rarely did work like this. It’s weird for me to function unless I have a deadline.

Which of the Simpsons characters would you like to see done in this style?

If you scroll through you can see the stages of the piece along with the Bart & Milhouse prints. The BART INKS are still available - hit me up if interested!! As an added bonus I included the Ben Edlund TICK artwork as well.

ALL ORDERS are shipping this coming week. Thanks for being patient! It’s just me over here.

I’ll have a new Frida Kahlo colorway dropping soon! It’s been long sold out but there was a LOT of demand for more. I managed to stifle my self-loathing for a few minutes & redesigned the art with new colorways!
