MILHOUSE!

millhouse.regular.jpg

MILHOUSE 10/8/14
18x24 screenprint
MORE INFO HERE
http://bodega.brianewing.com/search.php?search_query=simpsons

Here’s the Milhouse print I designed for my solo show “SCREAM WITH ME” at @galerief in Chicago! I had just finished this piece around this time in 2014.

I think everyone wants to be Bart Simpson but deep down they know they’re more like Milhouse van Houten. He’s just more relatable. Every time he gets bullied by Nelson Muntz (haha) your heart hurts because you’ve been there. He’s definitely mine and many other people’s spirit animal…

But I digress…

Because I had so many pieces due for “Scream With Me” in such a short period I decided to work smaller to cut my time in half. Normally I was working at 11x17 which is the standard comic book page size. Out of panic, I switched to working at 8.5x11 & haven’t looked back. Now I usually work at that smaller size. If you’re careful inking you can scan it at 600 dpi & it’ll enlarge perfectly to final poster size - 18x24

Which of the Simpsons characters would you like to see done in this style?

I did make a Lisa Simpson as a gift to a friend and only released it as a mini print - that you can only get from me at conventions or through select shops and galleries. . It looks like Galerie F started to carry some of my mini prints now! Give them a follow & pick some up. Tell them to carry more of my work too!!! They’re only available from me in person at shows or select shops & galleries.

If you scroll through you can see the stages of the piece & the variants I designed for the show! The inks for BART are still available - hit me up if interested!! The Milhouse inks have sold! There’s even a Milhouse Tattoo I did on someone early in my tattoo apprenticeship!

ALL ORDERS are shipping this coming week. Thanks for being patient! It’s just me over here. . . . I’ll have a new Frida Kahlo colorway dropping soon! It’s been long sold out but there was a LOT of demand for more. I managed to stifle my self-loathing for a few minutes and redesigned the art with new colorways!

OR LINK IN BIO!

In continuation of “every day is Halloween” here’s the Bart Simpson print I designed. I had just finished this piece around this time in October 2014 - for my solo show “SCREAM WITH ME” at @galerief in Chicago!

I was creating ALL-NEW pieces for the show and wanted to add some levity to what was all horror movie related. I think I had 2 months to crank out 13 new pieces for the show. I think. I dunno how much time I had, but it was short.

I remember seeing the first episode of The Simpsons when it debuted on The Tracey Ullman Show back in 1987!! Then came the Tree House Of Horror in 1990 and in between all of that was the “Bootleg Bart” phenomenon that lives on to this day. I wish I would have kept some of those shirts…The Simpsons were part of my DNA as a kid and I’m happy that Matt Groening’s influence is still rattling around in my brain.

If you scroll through you can see the stages of the piece and the variants I designed for the show! The inks are still available - hit me up if interested!!

So yeah, I was trying a lot of new stuff for this show and had never thought I could make the anatomical style…funny! I’m really happy with the result. I also created a Milhouse version similar to this for the show. I’ll post that next. I had really wanted to explore more of the characters with this style but I am always easily distracted by the next project ahead of me.

Which of the Simpsons characters would you like to see done in this style?

I did make a Lisa Simpson as a gift to a friend and only released it as a mini print - that you can only get from me at conventions or through select shops and galleries.

P.S., It looks like Galerie F started to carry some of my mini prints now. They should carry MORE! NudgeNudgeWinkWink

ALL ORDERS shipping this week and next! Thanks for your patience!!!

I like most horror movies. They're fun and all. But...I LOVE the Classic Horror movie icons even more!

What are some of your favorites?

Frankenstein's Monster and the Bride of Frankenstein are, to me, the ultimate in film imagination and design. (Don't get me started on how amazing the Creature From The Black Lagoon is! Millicent Patrick never got the credit she deserved! Steve Wang comes in a close 2nd for his reimagining of the Creature from Monster Squad!)

Here's some stupid trivia that I really enjoy:
• The term Horror Movie wasn't coined until 1934.
• Frankenstein came out in 1931! Boris Karloff was 44 when he first portrayed the Monster!
• Jack Pierce did the make-up for both Boris Karloff as the Monster and Elsa Lanchester as the Bride.
• Even though the Bride has got to be the most iconic of the Universal Monsters, she only had 3 minutes of screen time.

The DANZIG "BLACK ARIA" regular prints are SOLD OUT!
THANKS to EVERYONE that picked it up!
THERE ARE A FEW FOILS LEFT!!!

NEW HALLOWEEN VARIANT OF THE BRIDE & MONSTER PRINTS! This month I'm releasing 2 NEW prints on regular and foil paper!!! . I dug these up from the crypt, dusted them off, and updated them for 2020! I'm really STOKED about the new printing technique we did on these. If you picked up the JOKER “GOTHAM GREEN” print then you'll know what I'm talking about!

The Bride and Monster are very important pieces in my evolution as an 'artist'! They were the beginning of a new style for me. It was a dark and stormy night in 2012, I had just left NYC, and moved to Ohio at the invite from friends and also to pry my head out of my butt. I really didn't know what I was going to do as a person or artist.

As soon as I landed in Ohio, I was asked to design posters for MELVINS and SWANS. There was no budget and the deadline was crazy. Out of desperation (aka no budget or time), I decided to try something new - the anatomical style. I figured if it didn't work I could just go back to my regular illustration style. To my shock, people didn't hate it and there was a demand. So I started to use that style for the next 8 years. It's been an interesting journey so far - with highs and lows and more highs.

THANK YOU for tagging along and supporting me all these years.

The last variant of these two was the SILVER SCREAM pieces for my solo show of the same name back in 2015!

Five years later and almost 8 years to the date of releasing the MELVINS poster - I present to you the HALLOWEEN 2020 Variant. Now with sparkles aaand a foil variant!!

APOCALYPSE SUITE BY BRIAN EWING - PLATE 3

EWING.UA.typewriter.giclee.forweb.jpg

The UMBRELLA ACADEMY “APOCALYPSE SUITE” portfolios are now up in the shop!

Don’t forget to use code “RENTMONEY” for a super-secret discount!!!

The portfolio includes 8.5" x 11" ea (Set of 3)
1 exclusive FOIL sticker Giclee Print
Artist Edition of 50
Illustrated Envelope
Signed & Numbered

I also made a new enamel pin, sticker, and art for the envelope. I wanted this to look as fancy as possible.

PLATE 3

The “Typewriter” piece was also fun to do but I was freaking out at this point. The art director referenced the Nick Cave poster I had designed and wanted basically that. Easy. But I didn’t make it easy. ( I never do…) I knew that he didn’t want me to replace Nick’s head with Gerard’s and call it day. So I had to come up with another way of drawing something I had already done without copying myself. So I threw EVERYTHING in there. Hence the Easter Eggs. The only similarity is that I wanted to draw Gerard typing as if he were playing the piano. Same as what I did for the Nick Cave poster. Plus they’re both wearing suits.

Here are a few of the Easter Eggs I hid in there:

• The #typewriter is an Adler Universal 39. The same machine that Jack Torrance uses in the movie The Shining.
• I “hid” 3 books on Gerard’s desk. ALL published by Dark Horse! Pretty sneaky I know.
1 “The Umbrella Academy” (obviously)
2 The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys (sorta obvious). I did one of the covers for that mini-series and also an art print that you should pick up nudge nudge wink wink! Gerard Way wrote the book and Becky Cloonan (the coolest person alive) drew it.
3 Don’t Hold Your Breath (not obvious). In 2010 Dark Horse published a book on me and my artwork. I recently heard it was soon to be on permanent display in the Smithsonian. It’s true! And dogs can’t look up! (I’m sure it’s actually in the bargain bin.)
• You can find the full list on my blog HERE

APOCALYPSE SUITE BY BRIAN EWING - PLATE 2

EWING.UA.umbrella.giclee.forweb copy.jpg

The UMBRELLA ACADEMY "APOCALYPSE SUITE" portfolios are now up in the shop!
MORE INFO HERE
The portfolio includes a set of three 8.5" x 11" Giclee prints
1 exclusive FOIL sticker
Edition of 50
Signed & Numbered
Illustrated Envelope

I also made a new enamel pin, sticker, and art for the envelope. I wanted this to look as fancy as possible.

PLATE 2

This was designed to spread over 2 pages.
For the “Umbrella” piece the art director had sent over an idea of Gerard holding an umbrella. I liked the idea and just put my own spin on it. I always wanted to draw someone holding an umbrella as skulls rained down on them. Which I’m sure was 200% inspired by my art hero Mike Mignola!! I was really enjoying Photoshop with this piece. Again, I normally used the program to make jpgs. It took some courage (aka stupidity) to try it on a freelance project instead of waiting to do a personal piece. Which I never have time for. I finally figured out what the "overlay" option does in layers!!!

Normally I would’ve turned in sketches for all of the illustrations at the same time but there wasn’t much time and I really wanted to get as close to a likeness of Gerard as time would allow me. Again I only had a few days. So I turned in sketches for the other 2 illos once the cover was finished. I’m sure I could draw him in my sleep now.

I inked these as I normally do but then finished everything in Photoshop! In the 18 years that I've been a full-time freelance artist, I've done all my color and design work in Illustrator. I wanted to try something new for this. My brain is still angry with me but… as I said I'm REALLY HAPPY with the final pieces.
I fell down the “overlay” rabbit hole on this project!

APOCALYPSE SUITE BY BRIAN EWING - PLATE 1

EWING.UA.pose.giclee.forweb.jpg

The UMBRELLA ACADEMY “APOCALYPSE SUITE “portfolios are now up in the shop!

MORE INFO HERE

The portfolio includes 8.5" x 11" ea (Set of 3)
1 exclusive FOIL sticker
Giclee Print Artist Edition of 50
Illustrated Envelope
Signed & Numbered

I also made a new enamel pin, sticker, and art for the envelope. I wanted this to look as fancy as possible.

PLATE 1

I remember having a little over a week to design this and two other full-page ills for the original project. Normally it takes me at least a week to design ONE illo. ONE! So I had to take a few days off from tattooing and not sleep that whole week. Since it was a weekly magazine the deadline was INSANE! My brain still hurts thinking about it. But I did it and I’m very proud of how it turned out.

Kerrang had wanted me to illustrate Gerard Way from the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge days. I originally thought it would be fun to draw him in one of the Umbrella Academy schoolboy-uniform and looking kinda bratty. Similar to the character he plays in the I’m Not Okay video. And to signal that he had a life outside of being a musician. But that got nixed. So I drew him in a suit - similar to the outfit he wore during the Taste Of Chaos tour. (I was on that tour as well so I saw them play every night. Tons of fun!)

This was originally meant to be the cover of the magazine. But at the last minute, they used it for the back cover instead. Ah well…it’s still a cover!!!

The other idea was that they wanted me to do a skeleton over Gerard - similar to the style I had started using in my poster work. We all felt that it was too busy and (not deadline-friendly) and nixed that. Whew!

I used a dry brush technique on his hair since he wore it messy. It was weird to use minimal line work on this. But…I had a deadline #DeadlinesRuleEverythingAroundMe and I wanted to build up the illustration with shading and coloring.

The thing is, I really didn’t know how to use photoshop. I used it to make jpegs!!! (I worked mostly in illustrator.) So I had to learn on the spot. Since then I’ve made sure to improve on every project involving photoshop! My poor brain…

So yeah, that’s how this piece came together.

UMBRELLA ACADEMY PENCILS & INKS

Here are the inks and pencils for the Umbrella Academy “APOCALYPSE SUITE” portfolio I just released.

.

MORE INFO HERE https://bit.ly/34AB2QR

.

I start out with a sketch on 8.5 x 11 bond paper. I used a Prismacolor col-erase pencil. I prefer them over regular pencils. Not sure why. They were introduced to me by animator friends and again during my tattoo apprenticeship. I feel that the color lead is more aesthetically pleasing too!

.

From there I’ll scan it and clean it up. I’ll also create a mock-up for the final product. In this case, it’s for the envelope art I created exclusively for the portfolio set. That way I can make sure it works with the type and will fit. The worst thing is having to not have a plan and lose hours trying to design around the artwork.

.

I’ll then print the sketch out onto 8.5 x 11 2-ply bristol board. I have a crappy b&w printer that can barely handle thick papers. Which is perfect because the toner won’t stick to the surface. I can easily erase it off. This saves me a TON of time because I don’t haft lose hours tracing and tightening up the sketch.

.

Then I start inking.

TOOLS:

Winsor and newton series7 sable brush size 0
Alvin drafting circle templates
dr ph martins Blackstar India ink
rotring rapidograph ink
Faber-Castell pitt pens

• You can watch a time-lapse of me inking this piece HERE https://youtu.be/7F9glOFC73s
