UMBRELLA ACADEMY INKING VIDEO BY BRIAN EWING

The Umbrella Academy “APOCALYPSE SUITE” portfolios are now up in the shop!

MORE INFO HERE

I made a quick time-lapse video of me penciling and inking the new envelope art for the "APOCALYPSE SUITE" portfolio!

Last year Kerrang Magazine commissioned me to draw the cover, poster, and interior illos for their feature on Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and his new show "The Umbrella Academy"! Now that Netflix has just wrapped up the 2nd season of the show (which was AWESOME!!!) - I am FINALLY releasing the "APOCALYPSE SUITE" PORTFOLIO!

I also made a new enamel pin, sticker, and this piece of art for the envelope. I wanted this to look as fancy as possible.

The portfolio is a set of three 8.5" x 11" prints and housed in a 9"x12" envelope.
Also includes 1 exclusive FOIL sticker
Edition of 50 Signed & Numbered

I’m finishing up a deadline this week. Apologies in advance if it takes me a bit to respond to emails! I’m the CEO and Janitor over here!!! . . . . .

NEW UMBRELLA ACADEMY SNEAK PEEK 5

ua.envelope.cover.forweb.jpg

Here’s a sneak of the new The Umbrella Academy Apocalypse Suite portfolio I’m releasing in conjunction with the enamel pin … VERY SOON!

This art is for the envelope that’ll hold the prints! When I was younger (in the 1880’s) and was working at a comic book store - comic book artists used to independently publish portfolios of their work. And like a dork, I collected a lot of them. Especially from artists like Jeff Jones, Michael Kaluta, Berni Wrightson, Mike Zeck and Tim Vigil. I found the portfolios recently after unpacking some studio boxes and I wanted to do something similar to that - with a printed envelope and more!

It was a ton of fun to do this piece. I FINALLY tried out the @truegrittexturesupply distress press beat tones & litho tone brushes I penciled and inked it manually but did the rest in photoshop. I don’t use brushes very often but these were REALLY easy to use - once I got out of my own way. I don’t know why I waited so damn long to try these out.

I also filmed the process and will post that as soon as I have time to edit it.

I got a few emails regarding the pins* - YES the pins are FREE - but only to newsletter subscribers who pick up the UA portfolio.

So if you haven’t already… sign up for my newsletter HERE

* The pins will also be available separately.

More orders shipping this week. I hope to be caught up by then. THANKS to everyone for picking something up from the bodega!

HP LOVECRAFT ANATOMICAL ART PRINT BY BRIAN EWING

hp.goldanimation2.gif

Belated birthday to one of my favorite writers HP LOVECRAFT.
(Definitely NOT one of my favorite people.)

If anyone's interested...
MORE INFO HERE
18”x24" and printed with GLOW IN THE DARK ink!!!
Screen Print Artist Edition of 50
Signed & Numbered
Printed on Reich Metallic paper!

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born August 20, 1890 (died March 15, 1937) was an American writer of weird fiction and horror fiction, who is known for his creation of what became the #CthulhuMythos. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft spent most of his life in New England.

Here’s an animation I made for the GID HP Lovecraft print I released last November.

The idea to do the Lovecraft portrait came about when I was commissioned to do the poster for Metallica’s show in Oslo, Norway. A week after getting the job I was at Metallica’s show in Cincinnati (back in January of 2019) and Kirk Hammett invited us backstage and asked what I was working on. I was so excited to tell him my idea. He approved. I probably peed myself a bit.

I changed the METALLICA lyrics from one of the greatest songs by the band - The Thing That Should Not Be back to the original quote from Lovecraft’s story - The Nameless City for this art print!!

"That is not dead which can eternal lie.
And with strange aeons even death may die."

I hafta admit I like Call of Cthulu but I always go back to The Shadow Over Innsmouth as my favorite. If I ever get the time I would love to illustrate that story.

Some of my other favorites of his are definitely
• The Nameless City
• The Whisperer in Darkness
• The Shadow Out Of Time

What are your favorites?
Has anyone caught LOVECRAFT COUNTRY yet?!?!
It's AMAZING!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELLIOTT SMITH!

ELLIOTTSMITH.jpg

ELLIOTT SMITH
11"x17" Offset circa 5/27/00!

The other day would've been Elliott Smith 's 51st birthday.

I did this poster 20 years ago!!! (Crazy, I never thought I’d be writing about it today.) I’d just moved to Los Angeles (from Minneapolis) and was working at a Kinko's when I designed this poster. I lived a few blocks off of Melrose. This was also one of the first color posters I had done. I designed it to be screen printed but had no idea how to get that done. So it was offset printed. Back then, I was still doing flyers for First Avenue in Minneapolis.

I was fortunate to see Elliott Smith perform a few times while I lived in MPLS and LA. I'd also see him hanging out at my favorite French joint The Figaro Bistro in Los Feliz, where I'd get coffee and wonder what the heck I was doing as an artist. (I miss those days...sometimes. I was always too scared to talk to him.) Instead, I’d hide behind my sketchbook, sipping my coffee, and try to not be a creep.

I was deeply saddened after hearing of his passing. His music helped me get through some tough times and is a great soundtrack if you ever spend a day in Silverlake, or you're getting over a shitty relationship.

• What was your favorite Elliott Smith song?

My favorites were: "Angeles" "Somebody That I Used To Know", "Miss Misery", and "Everything Means Nothing To Me". Pretty much everything on "EITHER/OR".

• If you keep scrolling you can see the original ink drawing and sketches I made to produce the poster…waaaay back in 2000!!! I’m happy to see an evolution in the way I work.

I didn't have a strategy back then. I kept drawing until something looked good. Not the best practice when you have deadlines but I had to start off somewhere. I remember the only camera I had was a polaroid instant camera. (Cell phone cameras weren't anything as great as they are today.) I posed for the composition. I threw on a button-up shirt and sipped coffee as someone took photos of me. Then I collected as much photo reference of Elliott Smith as I could. (Back then there weren't a lot of great hi-res photos to choose from.) I drew the body first then tried to draw Smith's head on top. (I'm very thankful for photoshop and black and white printers these days!) Then I would scan the sketch, enlarge it to fit the 11x17 format, and print that out. From there I would "lightbox" the sketch onto bristol board. For this one, I worked at 8.5x11. (A practice I use for most of my projects now.) I did a tight pencil drawing and inked it with a big ol' Winsor & Newton Series 7 #2 brush. (I use #0's nowadays.) After that, I scanned the inked drawing and put everything together in Illustrator.

The final piece was an 11x17 print on cardstock. I never feel like I can capture likenesses well but I am surprised that after all these years this one isn't too bad.

**If anyone’s interested - I found a few copies from the original print run.

DEMON I AM AND FACE I PEEL...

14700454.jpg

It’s the 38th anniversary of THE MISFITS WALK AMONG US album!!!

I remember buying this record when I was a kid. I bought this and TESTAMENT LIVE AT EINDHOVEN on vinyl - way back in 1988!!! From Bill at Rushmore Records!!! He helped the young and dumb discover good music.

In my excitement, I jumped on my skateboard and headed to my friend Jason’s house! He had a turntable and tape decks. I did not. I had a brick of blank tapes though! And cd players cost $1000!!! As expected, I hit a rock and flew through the air. Yet somehow managed to not destroy my new purchases in the process. I can’t say as much about my arms. I was a bloody mess.

This album began my love for the MISFITS and has lasted to this day. I had heard the band before but never actually owned anything by them. It has shaped who I am and continues to influence me 32 years later.

Here are some ART PRINTS I designed a few years back!

Thanks for reading!

BOOK FIEND CLUB #3 Miracola Ink Drawings Art Book – Volume One

I first met JEFF MIRACOLA when I was a freshman at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts (in Milwaukee, WI). He and another recent graduate talked to our class about art school and their experiences as graduates from MHSA.

A few years later I bumped into him when he was working at a Kinko's in Milwaukee, WI. (I was later inspired to do the same thing - get a job at Kinko's but in Minneapolis!) A friend and I were trying to put together our portfolios for a small gaming convention called GenCon. You might've heard of it. I was barely 18 and had no clue on how to put together a portfolio or get a freelance job. Jeff was behind the counter and remembered me from his talk.

bookfiendclub.MIRACOLA.2.jpg

I don't know if Jeff ever knew how big of an impact he had on me. That day he showed me how to put together a simple portfolio and make a business card. He was the first professional artist I had ever met. The simple lesson he taught me has helped me out every day since.

I'm not getting paid to write this - so enough gushing.

Since then Jeff and I have stayed in touch and watched each other's careers ebb and flow.

A few years back Jeff and his wife, Silvia Acevedo, started Three Points Publishing to house the tutorial videos Jeff was working on and then to publish Silvia's "God Awful" novels.

"Miracola Ink Drawings" is their latest release. I found out about it through the Three Points Kickstarter campaign. I'm a big fan of supporting friends with their projects. I was very happy to see that this was successfully funded. I paid a little extra to get Jeff to include a sketch in the book. Really stoked on that!

If you're into learning how to ink (with a BRUSH!!!) then you should check this out. I thought I knew a few things about inking but the pieces in here showed me that I know nothing about dry brush! Jeff gets amazing effects with toothy paper and little ink. I feel that the more whimsical pieces are his best of the collection. They're different from what I'm used to seeing from his style and show a lighter side to Jeff's creative process.

Jeff’s doing stuff with his inking that I'm afraid to do. He's taking chances.
I spent so many years trying to NOT SUCK at inking - that I've been afraid to try new techniques.

Jeff kills it every time. I wish I had the output he has.
Sorry, that was more gushing.

I’m eagerly awaiting their inking tutorial video that should come out later this year.

I made a quick flip video of the book so you can see how rad it is. I also picked a few of the many pieces I wanted to highlight because I think the pieces are really good!

I hope you dig! Please check out Jeff and Sylvia at their site THREE POINTS PUBLISHING, or at a convention, YOUTUBE or via their books on AMAZON! Support artists!!!
