BOOK FIEND CLUB #2 HUGHES Gen 13: Ordinary Heroes
Gen 13: Ordinary Heroes Paperback – October 1, 2004
I've been a HUGE fan of Adam Hughes since my teenage years when I worked at a comic book store (Collector's Edge) back in Milwaukee, WI. My first exposure to his work was when a coworker had shown me a sketch he commissioned from Hughes. This was when I learned about the term "Good Girl Art" or Pin-Up Art. From that point on I tried to collect any comic book, pin-up or cover Adam Hughes would draw. There was a LOT. Then I went as far as finding any and every interview that was printed in fanzines back then. Which there weren't too many of. Sigh…
Right around the same time - I was discovering Dave Stevens through his Rocketeer comic book and his art book "Just Teasing" (that had just come out). Which then introduced me to Betty Page. I could go on and on about my love for Stevens' work. Expect a post on that soon.
Anywho… I could see the shared interest and influence between the two artists. Which I loved! They both had a style that I really wanted to aspire to! A lot of my inking has been HEAVILY influenced by these two artists. Oh and Charles Burns too!
I remember picking up the original issues of "Gen 13: Ordinary Heroes" back in 1996 when I was living in Minneapolis, MN. I was regularly haunting Big Brain Comics back then and bought all my comics and books from the owner and all-around good dude - Drivas. He was my sherpa to good music and comics back then.
I used these 2 issues as my bible for drawing good female faces and hair. Eventually, I destroyed the books because I was constantly referring to them whenever drawing and (my futile attempts at) inking with a brush. I'm sure I have every panel memorized.
A few years later, a friend had some full-size xerox copies of the original pages that he gave me while cleaning out his studio. To me, that was the Holy Grail. I studied those copies to DEATH. Never wanting to be an Adam Hughes clone but definitely wanting to let his work wash all over me like Gatorade at the end of the Super Bowl. That's not too weird, is it? More than 15 years later - I still have the xerox copies and still find them inspiring.
One day, while looking for replacement copies of the two issues, I noticed that Image/ Wildstorm Comics had collected them into a trade paperback along with a story I didn't know about - that was inked by Kevin Nowlan!!! Don't get me started on how awesome Nowlan is!!! PLUS there are a few pages of pin-ups by Hughes - reprinted inside!
The TPB also includes a story drawn by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer. In all honesty - I don't think it should have been included in this collection. It's great art but doesn't fit. You can tell the publisher was banking on Hughes' work to sell the book. And that was what got me to buy it. Apologies to Davis and Farmer. You guys deserve your own collection!
It's TOTALLY WORTH the cover price of $14.95! You could find the individual issues for less but you get that plus the short story (PLUS the pin-ups) all packaged in an affordable book.
Like I said earlier, the issues drawn by Adam Hughes were my art school. I'm proud that I can still see his influence in my work. Especially with how I try to draw hair and eyes.
I had to limit my picks to a few pages that I liked the most and found inspiring. I also made a quick flip video of the book so you can see all the amazing art inside. Hopefully, it'll inspire you to go to a convention, bookstore, follow Adam Hughes on Instagram @atomhues or troll Amazon to geek out some more on his work!!!

TIRED OF BEING ALIVE!
2019 Retrospective
Wow…so crazy to close the chapter on this year (and DECADE!!!)
THANK YOU to everyone for the encouragement and support. I’m not doing anything special or life-saving so I appreciate the time people put in to supporting me (and other artists) this year. BIG BIG THANKS to all of my clients and patrons for taking a chance and hiring me. I hope to do more work with you guys soon!
I have no idea how 2020 is going to turn out. All I can really do is work my ass off and remember to sleep. I just really want to grow as an artist (and begrudgingly as an adult) this year!
Top row from left to right
• I was a guest artist at @sonictemplefestival this year and they asked to use my #marilyn artwork on the side of the stadium! That blew my mind! They asked me back for 2020! So stoked! Thanks Keith and Danny!
• A few years back I had done an art print for an art show. I decided to do a portrait of #KurtCobain from the #heartshapedbox video. I was getting a lot of requests to do a new colorway - so I did. This then lead to some new projects that I hope to announce some time in 2020.
• I had some extra space on a print run so I decided to take this unpublished drawing and make a screen print of it. There are a million portraits of #edgarallenpoe I was trying to go in a different direction on this. Plus I was heavily influenced by @artofmm for this piece.
• #HPLOVECRAFT is one of my favorite authors. His work and #lovecraftian #cosmichorror style has had a BIG influence on the many projects I’ve done. This print glows in the dark. I made this into an art print after the #METALLICA print sold out.
• @METALLICA are one of those bands EVERYONE has heard of. When Tim at @nakatomi_inc hit me up to do a poster for their European tour I sent in a million ideas including the anatomical portrait of #Lovecraft I new the band was a big fan of the author and even though there are Metallica posters with #cthulu on it no one ever bothered to design a poster with the author on it. Thanks again time and Metallica for the opportunity!!!
• This was for @iggypopofficial BIG THANKS to Spelly for hiring me to do this. I knew that everyone was going to a portrait of #iggypop so I went the opposite direction. I’m glad I did. It stood out amongst the other posters (mostly portraits). #LUSTFORLIFE is my favorite album by Iggy. The pose of the #clown reminded me of all the #religiousart I grew up with. And in a way it’s also tragic. Kinda like the characters in Pop‘s music. Or even Iggy himself - a doomed romantic. A clown who can make everyone happy but himself.
• The #TAXIDRIVER piece was originally done for the #martinscorcese show curated by Ken of spoke_art at #boldhypegallery ! Still proud of this piece.
• At the beginning of 2019 @kerrangmagazine_ hit me up to design their cover and interior artwork to celebrate @gerardway (of@mychemicalromance) and his new series on @netflix " @umbrellaacad “! Such a FUN project! I hope to do more with Kerrang or MCR!!
• In 2019 I started making pillows of some of my back catalog of work. Thanks to EVERYONE who picked them up. Expect more for 2020.
That’s about it. THANKS to everyone who stuck around for the year and this novel-length post!!!
BOOK FIEND CLUB #1 KATSUYA TERADA REAL SIZE
KATSUYA TERADA REAL SIZE Hardcover – October 1, 2019
This is one of my favorite books published in 2019. I picked this up directly from the publisher SUPERANI back in October. Here’s a link to their site - SUPERANI
I was lucky enough to get a copy with an original sketch by the artist - Katsuya Terada! (You can see the sketch at the end of the flip video - at the end of this post.)
Sadly they are sold out but you can get the unsigned version from Amazon HERE!
I’ve been a huge fan of Katsuya Terada since buying the “Creature Core” book back in ’92 - that was published by Hobby Japan and Yasushi Nirasawa! Get that book if you can!!!
Terada’s work had a huge impact on my teenage brain. Whether it was sculpting or illustration. I had never seen ideas drawn like that before. It was sexy and dark! I wanted to draw subject matter like this guy! Everything he was doing was just so damn cool! I did a series of “stitch girls” for gig posters that were heavily inspired by Terada.
Since then I’ve been trying to get my hands on any and every book that features Terada’s work. The most current book - “KATSUYA TERADA REAL SIZE” makes it 14 books total I’ve been collecting on his work. I find his work VERY inspiring.
If you dig Moebius aka Jean Giraud then you’ll dig this artist!
I chose this book to start the BOOK FIEND CLUB blog because I had just watched a great mini-documentary on Terada - “Katsuya Terada - Life Drawing”. I blame Dave Crosland for turning me onto Archipel - the people behind this doc and many other cool docs about Japanese artists!!!
This book showcases a lot of the current (2011-2018) “life drawing” pieces he has done. The pieces are so big that they are printed at 16% of the original size with cropped parts printed at 100%. The scale and amount of detail is amazing. Especially since a lot of the pieces are drawn directly with a marker and no sketch underneath. Personally, I don’t have the guts to attempt something like that yet.
The whole book is inspiring! But I had to limit my picks to a few pages that I liked the most and found inspiring. I also made a quick flip video of the book so you can see all the amazing art inside. Hopefully, it’ll inspire you to go to a convention, bookstore, the SUPERANI site or AMAZON to find out more about Katsuya Terada!!!

Hey guys!
This blog post is a bit "long in the tooth"!
Very EXCITED to FINALLY make available the TWO collaborations I did with KIRK HAMMETT (of METALLICA)!!! It's safe to assume EVERYONE knows of Metallica. So for me this was a very important job. The project nearly killed me because I pushed myself to go above and beyond and do the best professional work I could at this point! It definitely changed me and has lit a huge fire under my ass to push even further on future pieces. Hope you dig!!!
• DESIGNER CON - I'll be at BOOTH 2317!

KIRK HAMMETT - IT'S ALIVE! - PRINTS FINALLY AVAILABLE
A few months back I was commissioned by Kirk Hammett and his management to design the poster for his current exhibit with the ROM - Royal Ontario Museum! The project went from one piece to two pieces after a few excited discussions. (My 15 year old self has been freaking out these past couple of months!!)
It was fun to imagine Kirk in the anatomical style. After some back and forth with management we found a great photo that came across as dark (but not cheesy). After designing the Emma Ruth Rundle poster I wanted to bring more illustration to the foreground on pieces like this. I was able to do that with the rats and bats. Since there were vampire bats in the NOSFERATU poster - I wanted to bring them into the this piece. And since rats are iconic in depicting Nosferatu I thought it would be cool to include them as well. I tried to imagine the subject was awakening from a long sleep in their crypt.
I also designed the “IT’S ALIVE” logo!
Creating the collage was a lot of fun too. There might be a few easter eggs hidden in the details!
So stoked that this was made available at the ROM!!! I (sorta) made it into a MUSEUM!!!!
These are printed using a special metallic ink combo, this print actually changes as you walk around it for an optical illusion that’s not to be missed!

GUITAR PICKS!!!
So besides designing the logo for the IT'S ALIVE prints I was also asked to design guitar picks for Kirk to give out at shows. I'm still blown away!!! I never thought I'd get to do so many cool things for one project!
I wish I could do more stuff like this for bands! nudgenudgewinkwink
As a BONUS if you "pick" up one of the prints (signed by Kirk) you will also get one of these guitar picks!!!!
These are not available separately. Nor can I send extras. I only got a handful and I wanted to share the love with you guys!!!
KIRK HAMMETT - NOSFERATU
Here's the second print collaboration - NOSFERATU. This was created specifically for Kirk's side project - "The Wedding Band". Which consists of METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo, Ugly Kid Joe singer Whitfield Crane, ex Queens of the Stone Age/Danzig drummer Joey Castillo and guitarist Doc Coyle of Bad Wolves (ex God Forbid).
They played a private show at Cosmo Music in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, on July 26, 2019. The only way you could get a copy was if you were at the show (or for a million dollars on ebay).
It wasn't difficult to get this idea approved. Kirk is a big fan of Nosferatu and so am I. I've done a few pieces already with that character. So it was fun to take it further on this print.
The idea I presented to him was that Nosferatu was looming over the Royal Ontario Museum - as if finally awakened after hundreds of years of sleep. And since the ROM has a well known exhibit on bats I thought it would be cool to have vampire bat's escaping - ready to wreak havoc and do thy master's bidding.
The best part for me was the coloring (oh and drawing his finger nails). I don't use photoshop often - so this was an interesting journey to learn more about the program.

I'M NOT NOT OKAY (I PROMISE)...
The cool folks at KERRANG hit me up to do their cover and interior artwork to celebrate Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance) and his new series on Netflix "THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY". I was stoked and couldn't say no to such a cool opportunity. By chance this is the 4th project I've done associated with Gerard Way. Totally weird to type that last sentence. I'm stoked that I've been an artist this long. Why haven't any pianos fallen on me yet (...knock on wood)?
I ended up doing 3 illustrations for the project. They requested that I draw Gerard from the "Revenge…" album era of his life. Since it's a weekly magazine the deadline was INSANE! I had a little over a week to turn in sketches, get approval and then turn in finished pieces. Normally it takes me a week to design and illustrate a poster. 1 poster! One!! That's how my brain and hands work. Somehow I was able to cram 3 illustrations into 1 week. My brain STILL hurts but I'm very proud of completing the project and the final results.
Trying to get the vibe of the cover and be on the same page as my art director and editor took me a few tries. They were really patient with me and let me find my groove. Sometimes it takes more than 1 try. Sometimes it takes 13 tries.
I started out by fitting the subject in the Umbrella Academy outfit from the show. The magazine wasn’t feeling it and that was fine. Drawing people in suits is much easier. For some reason I just wanted to give him red eyes whenever I could. I guess it kind of made him look too evil. One day I’ll get to draw a portrait and make them look like a vampire. One day…
After the last try the art director and editor were happy and I got to finish the piece. Normally I would’ve turned in sketches for all of the illustrations at the same time but there wasn’t much time and I really wanted to get as close to a likeness of Gerard as time would allow me. Again I only had a few days. So I turned in sketches for the other 2 illos once the cover was finished. I’m sure now I could draw him in my sleep.
I inked these as I normally do but then finished everything in Photoshop! In the 17 (or is it 16 or is it 13) years I've been a full time freelance artist I've done all my color and design work in Illustrator. I wanted to try something new for this. My brain is still angry with me but… as I said I'm REALLY HAPPY with the final pieces.
For the “Umbrella” piece the art director had sent over an idea of Gerard holding an umbrella. I liked the idea and just put my own spin on it. I always wanted to draw someone holding an umbrella as skulls rained down on them. I was really enjoying Photoshop with this piece. Again, I normally used the program to make jpgs. It took some courage (aka stupidity) to try it on a freelance project instead of waiting to do a personal piece. Which I never have time for.
The “Typewriter” piece was also fun to do but I was freaking out at this point. The art director referenced the Nick Cave poster I had designed and wanted basically that. Easy. But I didn’t make it easy. ( I never do…) I knew that he didn’t want me to replace Nick’s head with Gerard’s and call it day. So I had to come up with another way of drawing something I had already done without copying myself. So I threw everything in there. Hence the Easter Eggs. The only similarity is that I wanted to draw Gerard typing as if he were playing the piano. Same as what I did for the Nick Cave poster. Plus they’re both wearing suits.
So here are the Easter Eggs:
1. I hid the Umbrella Academy logo on the cover.
2. The typewriter is an Adler Universal 39. Same machine that Jack Torrance uses in the movie “The Shining”.
3. The Umbrella Academy logo takes place of the Adler logo for the typewriter. Plus I “hid” my “signature” signature on the other side. I think it’s egg-worthy.
4. Number 6 is the dead brother from the show. He’s dead the whole time so I didn’t spoil anything. I told the art director it was Vanya’s number because I only had a Netflix ad to go off and I was trying to do 3 weeks of work in 1 week! One week!!! I read the graphic novel years ago and just went with it cuz I knew how it ended. I hadn’t seen the show while I was working on these. After turning in the job a few days later the show premiered. 5 minutes in and I thought “I totally messed up!” But then #6 ends up being dead the whole time. So that totally works. Take that dementia!
I didn’t hafta fire myself. Lucky me…
5. That’s Vanya’s violin on the wall.
6. I “hid” 3 books on Gerard’s desk. ALL published by Dark Horse! Pretty sneaky I know.
• “The Umbrella Academy” (obviously).
• “The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys” (sorta obvious). I did one of the covers for that mini series and also an art print that you should pick up nudgenudgewinkwink! Gerard Way wrote the book and Becky Cloonan (the coolest person alive) drew it.
• ”Don’t Hold Your Breath” (not obvious). In 2010 Dark Horse published a book on me and my artwork. I recently heard it was soon to be on permanent display in the Smithsonian. It’s true! And dogs can’t look up!
I’m sure it’s in the bargain bin.
7. Alexisonfire has a new album coming out. They should hire me!
8. Kerrang also made the COVER and UMBRELLA illos into posters that come with the magazine. Pretty stoked! Can’t wait to see them sell for millions on ebay…
9. To date this is the fourth project I’ve done involving this dude aka Gerard Way. If anyone can name all 4… I will hook you up with a bunch of cool crap. Email me. If you physically own all 4 I will give you a free drawing! Luckily I don’t hafta disqualify my family. They have no idea what I do for a living.
You can pick up the magazine at your local newsstand or get it online here. If they send me any copies I'll post them to my shop.
GOD'S LONELY MAN
“God’s Lonely Man”
18”x24” Signed & Numbered screenprint
Yesterday marks the film’s 43rd anniversary since it’s release on February 8th, 1976.
I, like every other bitter and young person, LOVED Taxi Driver after I first saw it. When Travis Bickle says “Loneliness has followed me my whole life, everywhere. In bars, in cars, sidewalks, stores, everywhere. There's no escape. I’M GODS LONELY MAN…” I could easily relate. Plus the score by Bernard Hermann was perfect and sadly his last. He passed away after completing it.
The print was originally done for SPOKE ART and their Scorsese show back in 2013. Since then it’s been published in a few books and it hangs in DeNiro’s office at Tribecca Films. Thanks John!!!
While I was working on this and geeking out on every detail of the film and Bickle ’s jacket I noticed the patches and was inspired to make a patch to go along with the print release. That I ended up releasing later cuz life got in the way. CLICK HERE to see the embroidered patch design and the fleece blanket.
